In the movie “Nim’s Island” where there is practically no other people around other than a girl and his biologist father, you would probably think that they are living in a separate world. However, they are still able to connect to the world through internet and a phone. The phone they were using is probably one model of a
satellite phone, or SAT phone.
SAT phones are mobile phones that can be very similar to ordinary mobile phones, except that they connect not through cell towers, but through satellites which makes them convenient communication devices for those who are in places that can’t be reached by the cell services. Depending on the model SAT phones’ coverage may range from within a region, or even anywhere in the planet. This is why it’s the ideal communication equipment for people who live or work in remote places, or those who have to do some emergency duties in areas where cell phones cannot be used, such as those who go on remote expeditions. It was in 1979 when SAT phones were started to be used on ships, and until now sailors are also known to use them whenever they are at sea.
In some areas such as Burma, SAT phones are banned since its signal will dodge telecom systems, and thus will evade censorship and wiretaps. However, in Australia it is possible to apply for government subsidy for it.
Because of its complexity and probably because of its capacity to connect amidst huge distance, SAT phones are truly much more expensive than ordinary mobile phones, especially the modern types. The price would range from around $1,000 to $2,000, but could go higher depending on the model. Airtime cost is also a lot higher per minute. With this, a lot of people would prefer to buy used SAT phones or just rent one.
True, technology is constantly bringing us devices that would make our lives more comfortable and efficient.
SAT phones prove not even distance could not prevent mankind from succeeding in their aims to connect with their fellows.
